Listener Feedback
- Dan: Are all AR15 .22LR magazines the same and/or interchangeable?
- Nathan: Why don’t people like handguns with magazine disconnects?
- Josh: Finding new episodes of Gun Guy Radio or the AR15 podcast on your iPhone is like finding a $20 bill in your pocket that you didn’t know was there.
- Kim: Details Canadian barrel length laws.
- Just a quick update on the whole barrel length thing for Canada that you guys we
talking about recently. The whole less than/greater than laws came about in 1991 under bill C-17. This bill moved all handguns with a less than 105mm (4.1”) as well as .25 and.32 caliber handguns into the “prohibited” category. What happened in the real world was that about 50% of the handguns in Canada were
reclassified. This was because most handguns at the time were 4” barreled revolvers as
well as WW1 and WW2 bring backs handguns. With this reclassification (referred to 12.6 classifications on our Firearms license) a number of interesting events occurred. One result was that all the 12.6 guns are not able to be sold except to other 12.6 licensed
people. Also you can not pass them on to other family members except if the gun as made before 1947 (this was for the bring back guns). So with the limited resale market the value of the 12.6 guns has dropped significantly.Another interesting fact is that if you were lucky or smart enough to be in possession
of a 12.6 gun when the law was enacted you were allowed to have the classification
endorsement on your license. If you ever let the possession of a 12.6 gun. i.e. you sell
one 12.6 gun to buy something else, you lose your 12.6 classification, if you let your
license expire or the government fails to renew your 5 year license in time you lose the
12.6 classification. If any of the above occur, death, sale, license failure etc the “prohibited 12.6 “guns are
seized and destroyed with out compensation. This law was enacted to remove as many firearms from our hands as possible over time, the gun grabbers are a patient bunch and will try to wait us out and get our guns. But with the manufacturers (Ruger and S&W) making 4.25” barreled revolvers for other markets and aftermarket manufactures like Lone Wolf making replacement barrels we have a legal workaround to allow us without the 12.6 classification to enjoy and possess these fun short guns.Sorry for the longwinded explanation but such is the state of the firearms laws in Canada.
Love the podcast, enjoy the hosts and guests and varied topics, I have also wandered over to the AR-15 Podcast and am looking forward to the additional podcasts starting in 2013.
